Waiting for the black keys to come on…

So we are sitting here waiting for the black keys to come on and realizing how old we are. We are actually cowered in a corner, Seth is reading blogs and I am posting to mine. How lame are we ;.). They do have an awesome tshirt with a turtle on it! Woot!

The bluepers won their game tonight 8-2. Seth got a couple of great hits too :.D

Now he is being nosey and watching me post. Guess we aren’t quite the concert goers we used to be.

In other news, my dad apparently had a heart attack that he didn’t know about. Turns out his artery was 80% blocked with what they call a “widow maker”. Good news is they were able to stent it and he’s at home now recovering. It’s a good thing be went in for his annual check up otherwise we would have never known about the blockage.

Man typing this on my phone takes a long time. Signing off to listen to one of the openers.

Happy New Year

2007 was great - less the back surgery thing, but at least everything is getting back to normal.  I am going to even start swimming and walking a little this week.  I’ve got an appointment with my orthopedic surgeon tomorrow.  I’m thinking that should go well since I haven’t had any real issues.  I haven’t had any pain in a pretty good while.  My doctor rocked - I’d happily refer anyone to him, but I hope none of you need to see him.  He’s so awesome he even cut around my tattoo!

Now if only I could kick this sore throat.

We had a  Rock band party for New Years this year and I think everyone had a great time.  I’ll post a link to a picture gallery soon.  Even Walter and Perry (our love birds) had a great time.

I have a feeling that this year is going to be a great year - if only because I ate way more black eyed peas than ever :-D  We even started the year off by taking down all our Christmas decorations on Jan. 1st - I don’t think we’ve ever managed that!  Go Wild Thornberrys!

New years resolutions

Send birthday gifts on time
Send thank you notes
Tithe and donate regularly - not all at the end of the year ;-P
I’m going to try and update my blog more often

Back breaking news!!!

That’s right, I get to have surgery on my back Nov. 19th at noon. It’ll be a microdiskectomy for me on the S1-L5 and the L4-L5. Here’s a little info. about it if you are curious.

My doctor will be Dr. Stephen Courtney.

I’ll be taking 2 weeks off work for recovery.  Wish me luck, hopefully after this I will be able to run again!

Triathlon - Olympic
Total Time = 3h 53m 56s
Overall Rank = 421/499
Age Group = 25-29F
Age Group Rank = 20/28

Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5 and met other TNTers in the lobby. Annita was kind enough to join me in the early a.m. Got to transition about 5:45, got marked and set up my area. Ate a banana, a bagel with honey and peanut butter, and drank a bottle of water. Walked around the race location checking everything out.

Event warmup:

Did some stretching and there was a little bit of a swim to the actual place we started off.

Beachy Tara

Swim - 950 meters in 34 minutes and 03 seconds

Comments:

I was really worried about the swim, but it ended up being perfect. The water was perfect and really there were no waves to speak of. It was definitely way better than lake Grapevine a week ago. My arms felt good. My main problem was sighting (or maybe it was partly the problem of the current I’ve been hearing about). Several times I found myself far away, swimming almost perpendicularly to everyone. Even times when I was looking up regularly I would do it. I don’t think normally I pull that much to one side, but man I think I might have swam an extra 100 meters or so, just trying to get back on track with everyone.

What would you do differently?:

Sighting, sighting, and more sighting!

Swimmy Tara

T1 - 4 minutes and 41 seconds

Comments:

Walked up a ramp out of the water, they had some Astroturf layed out for us to walk on, although some of it was muddy from the previous day. I stripped the suit down to my waist, walked through the little shower they had, let the wet suit strippers have at me, and jogged to transition area. The wet suit strippers were nice to have.

What would you do differently?:

Not too much, I wanted to make sure I had everything and was dry. I think I may work on getting onto my bike faster.

Bike - 28 miles in 1 hour 55 minutes and 32 seconds

Comments:

Man, what a head wind! I felt so ineffective heading out. I kept praying for the turn around to be soon. I had a little bit of a headache, which I think was caused by a little bit of water in my ear - once I felt the water level out the headache went away. I can’t corner to save my life either. I managed to eat half a peanut butter sandwich on the way out, take my electrolyte tablets, drink a full bottle of propel, and eat a few fig newtons, pretty good since I am afraid of letting go of the handle bars. Once I turned around so that I had a tailwind the ride was FREAKIN AWESOME!!!! I felt so much stronger and really picked up some speed on the way back.

What would you do differently?:

Practice more in the wind and/or with hills. Work on my turns. Put on anti-chaffing agent for saddle sores - ouchie!!!

Bikey Tara

T2 - 3 minutes 25 seconds

Comments:

I’m so clumsy getting off the bike, other than that it was fine. I did have to take a potty break though.

What would you do differently?:

Work on speedier dismount, other than that, if I need a potty break, I’m gonna take it.

Run - 6.5 miles in 1 hour 16 minutes and 13 seconds

Comments:

I felt pretty slow for about the first mile or so, but settled into a nice pace after. I stopped at every aid station and alternated between Gatorade and water. Had two gu’s and took 2 more electrolyte capsules. The run was really nice and mostly on sidewalks and roads, although there was a little stretch where we had to run through the grass (which ended up being marshy with all the rain the previous day). The grass was really uneven and I was kind of worried I would twist something, but I managed to stay upright. With two miles left my knee started hurting a little, I think because my shoes aren’t quite right for me, but I powered through it. The last mile rocked though, I picked it up and managed to squeak by a few people. As fun as it was I was so happy to be done.

What would you do differently?:

Wear the right shoes. Work on the middle portion of my run to get to where I can run it as strongly as the last part.

Finished Tara

Post race

Warm down:

Drank the bottle of water handed to us at the finish line (did I mention how awesome all the goodies they had for us were - Thanks Keith!) Watched several other TNTers finish their races. Had a banana, orange, peanut butter crackers, and a little bit of pizza. Stretched a little, but it wouldn’t have hurt to stretch a little more.

Awesome Chachy Shirt make Tara Strong

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Sighting during the swim was the most obvious one, but as mentioned above, I’ve got a lot of things to work on

Event comments:

Not to shabby for my first tri longer than a sprint distance.Crossing that finish line was one of the best feelings I have ever had, especially having some of my closest friends there cheering me on. - Did I mention they made shirts to cheer me on - I’ll have to post a picture! I had a fabulous time! I loved training with TNT for this event. And I couldn’t have asked for a better race. Thanks to all the people that helped with the race to make it a day I will always remember.

1 hour 44 minutes and 57 Seconds = Tara the triathlete!!!

O.k. so I am a little proud, but this is something I never would have thought I could do… I just wanted to share with all of you that I completed my first sprint distance (300 m swim, 14 mile bike, 3.1 mile run) triathlon this past weekend in 1 hour 44 minutes and 57 Seconds , and I am still alive. I realize not every one has time for the juicy details, but if you are interested they are on my beginner triathlete log - here. Here’s how I’ve trained for it.

My hubby has pictures posted here.

Thank you to all that have encouraged me in so many ways, you’ve helped make this possible. I had so much fun and don’t know if I will be able to stop the triathlon madness in me.

Two more weeks to go till I compete in the Lonestar Quarter Ironman (.6 mile swim, 28 mile bike, 6.5 mile run, April 1st in Galveston, Texas)! I’ll make sure to update you all on how that turns out too.

P.S. There’s still time to donate to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society if you want to.  Many of you have already been so generous that I have surpassed my initial goal ($2,600), I am now at $2,938! Please see the link below to donate.

Athens, Texas - my first triathlon

This Saturday I will put my training to the test and race a triathlon in Athens, Texas.  I’m a little scared, but mainly about my Olympic Tri April 1st (25 days away).  This weekend will be a good way to judge how prepared I am for it.

I invested in some new tires (of course I got the wrong size and have to exchange them ;-P).  My new trainer apparently eats away at my old tires.  I think I might just need to invest in a tire specifically for my trainer.  Man, this is all getting so expensive!

In other news, I REACHED MY DONATION GOAL!!!!  $2,863  for the Leukemia and Lymphoma society so far (my goal was $2,600)!  Thank you for all that have helped me make it to this point, be it through donations, garage sales, volunteering, training with me, cheering me on, or just bearing with me as triathlon consumes my life.  I couldn’t have done it without all of you, and that’s a fact.  You can expect individual and personal thank yous after my Olympic Tri April 1st, as well as pictures of me crawling across the finish line ;-)  I’m so lucky to have all of you in my life.
